Our second taster session, ‘Turning up with Purpose’, held at Eighteen, was nothing short of extraordinary. The evening brought together curious minds, purposeful conversations, and the inspiring guidance of Ian Harrison, as we explored the deeply motivating concept of Ikigai- the Japanese philosophy of finding one’s reason for being.
Ikigai represents the intersection between what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can b paid for. For a meaningful existence, our passion, talent and purpose are the core elements to lead a turn up to our daily lives with purpose. Real purpose.
Discovering the power of purpose
Ian began the session by inviting attendees to pause and reflect on a simple but profound question: ‘why do you do what you do?’ This question prompted a discussion that explored how reconnecting with our purpose can bring clarity, drive, and direction to our careers, communities and relationship.
The conversation quickly evolved into something far richer than just professional development. It became a dialogue about contribution and fulfilment- about how each of us, regardless of our background or current stage of life, can make a positive difference in the world around us.
Ian shared practical strategies for identifying the moments when we feel most alive, using those as clues to uncover where our passions and strengths naturally align.
Where do you feel lost alive, and why?

From reflection to action
Turning insight into action was the most empowering aspect of the session. It’s one thing to understand your purpose intellectually- it’s another to live it out intentionally. Ian guided the group through key actions anyone can take to begin making a meaningful impact immediately:
- Clarify your values: identify the principles that matter most to you and use them as a compass for your decisions.
- Start small: meaningful change often begins with small, consistent actions that ripple outward over time.
- Connect with others: purpose grows stronger in community. Sharing your journey and collaborating with like-minded people amplifies impact.

A Shared Sense of Inspiration
Throughout the evening, attendees shared stories, reflections, and “aha” moments that sparked genuine connection and energy in the room. There was a collective sense that purpose is not something we find once and hold onto forever—it’s something we continually nurture as we evolve.
By the end of the session, participants left feeling uplifted, motivated, and equipped with practical tools to integrate purpose into their daily lives. Many described the experience as a powerful reminder of the potential within each of us to show up with intention, compassion, and clarity—both personally and professionally.
