You may find yourself asking, What’s the point of setting goals when it’s easier to just go with the flow? With the same mindset, can you imagine footballers playing without getting the ball into the goal? The point is that goal setting gives you a vision for who you want to become. It gives you a sense of purpose.
Edgars Kalans began the session by discussing the ‘why’ behind goal setting- why it’s worth the effort and how it gives direction to our energy and time. Goal setting is more than writing a goal on a piece of paper; it’s about fuelling your purpose with the things you want to achieve.
What is the power of 10x?
The power of 10x is extremely powerful and it is used in goal setting to achieve higher than what you believe is possible. Essentially, the 10x rule enables you to set targets 10 times higher than you originally believe achievable. Using this technique will allow you to stretch yourself to grow beyond your comfort zone.
Questions to ponder:
- Have you ever achieved anything without having a vision for it?
- What is the biggest goal you have achieved and why?

SMART goals
Going deeper into the session, Edgars breaks it down easier to set goals using the SMART goals method. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound. Why does this work? It works because it streamlines your focus and direction, cuts the fluff, and makes you accountable for achieving your goals. The group delved into their personal and professional goals using the SMART goal method, whereby they left feeling lighter on taking the first steps in achieving their goals.
Using the SMART method, can you name a goal you want to achieve by the end of 2025?

Failures
Why do they happen and how do you deal with it? If there is one thing you take away from this blog post it will be that you are guaranteed failures. It’s part of the process. But should you let your failures break down your courage and resilience to keep achieving your goals? Absolutely not. Failure isn’t meant to be feared, but to be conquered. Imagine achieving your goals without failing? You may consider yourself lucky, but can you imagine how boring it’d be since there was no room for alternative thinking which sparks innovation and creativity? Failure is all about being better than before, it’s about all growth. So, you should be lucky to fail, so you can pick yourself back up again time and time again.
What if you were 30 failures away form achieving your goal, how fast would you want to fail?
The session rounded off with writing down some goals and discussing some of the goals around the room. It was refreshing to see what others wanted to achieve and how they’d go about achieving them. It offers a fresh perspective and empowers others to achieve theirs too.
